Welcome back to our series on the “Day in the Life” of nonprofit communicators, where we ask you to describe your day in your own words.
Nancy Brownsberger currently works as the Manager of Communications & Partnerships for SIRCH Community Services, a small, rural nonprofit in the beautiful Haliburton Highlands of Ontario, Canada. A social worker by trade and education, Nancy approaches community development through a lens of both person & community focused resiliency building.
Here is her typical day:
Before 8:00 am: Check email, have breakfast with family, check texts and head into the office for just after 8 am.
8:00 am – 10:00 am: Review priorities, review and return emails, read pertinent newsletter and blog updates from Kivi et al., return phone messages, check out Facebook analytics, meet with staff to review ongoing communications pieces, check in with staff team on general climate in the office, trouble shoot, answer questions, brainstorm.
10:00 am – 12:00 pm: Healthy, clean eating snack at my desk followed by specific projects involving written communications i.e. – review/revise agency communications plan, social media content development, writing of blog/submitted article, preparation for upcoming presentations/orientations, development of training modules, research for project planning, attend meetings.
10:00 am – 12:00 pm: Go to the gym or for a run (4 days a week)- eat lunch at my desk – review emails – return phone calls – troubleshoot, brainstorm with staff team – attend meetings – continue project specific tasks.
2:00 pm – 4:00 pm: Meetings, presentations, deliver training, planning meetings with staff team, planning sessions with program coordinators, research, project work…eat healthy snack at desk if hungry. Wrap up day between 4 pm and 6 pm where I lay out priorities for the next day, shut down the computer and head home to my second job (being a Mom).
After 4:00 pm: Check emails around 9 pm every night, respond to anything urgent.
