Here is our latest submission for our Day in the Life of a Nonprofit Communicator – Quarantine Edition. Let’s see how everyone else is doing out there adapting.
Karen’s Bio:
Karen Hansen is director of membership, marketing and communications for a journalism professional association. During quarantine, she and her cat split their time between her DC studio apartment and boyfriend’s northern Virginia townhouse. She’s been focusing on working smarter, not harder, and creating healthy habits while stuck at home. Her office has gone permanently remote and in her free time she dreams of exotic locales to work from.
And this is her typical work day while quarantined:
Before 8:00 a.m. Do you immediately grab your phone when you wake up? Are you taking the dog out? Breakfast with the family? Do you get dressed right away?
Wake up to the alarm, put workout clothes on, make coffee.
8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m Are you on the computer now or getting the kids set up with their school work? Dressed yet? Zoom meetings with colleagues?
Check email, drink coffee, plan my day, then take a 5000-step walk/jog with my boyfriend, followed by a quick breakfast.
10:00 a.m – 12:00 p.m. Are you still on schedule for the day? What systems are you using to stay organized? Is someone else in your house also working from home? How are you getting along? Dressed yet?
Work on my priorities for the day, usually thrown off by 11am! Frequent breaks to say hi to the cats and significant other (especially after calls). Lunch postponed until at least one task is checked off my priority list.
What time is it even? Are you hungry or just bored? Why is 6th grade math so different now? Did your significant other really just say “let’s circle back” on that call? Are you dressed yet?
App notification reminds me to figure out lunch, usually salad or leftovers.
Nap Time. What else is there to do? If you got dressed, do you get undressed for your nap?
Quick break to sit outside and do a crossword, regroup from all the calls.
Now, it’s really time to work. Did you finish everything you needed to do?
Figure out what has to happen before I can call it a day, because 5pm is workout time!
Wine O’Clock. White or red? Guess you don’t have to get dressed…
Workout, shower, put clean workout clothes back on, and make dinner, followed by walk round 2!
Thanks for sharing, Karen!
