In case you are brand new to social media, hashtags are words or phrases with the hash symbol (#) in front of them. The hash symbol creates a link and clicking on that hashtag will bring up other posts with that tag.
At just four pages, How to Use Hashtags to Promote Your Cause is a quick read, but it’s packed full of just about everything you need to know to get started:
- Benefits of hashtags
- List of hashtags relevant to nonprofits
- How to create a new hashtag for an event, campaign, or program and get others to use it
- Tips on how to relate events such as concerts or TV shows to your nonprofit
- Useful nonprofit Twitter chats for nonprofit professionals
- Hashtag tools
You can download this paper for free on our new Advice and Tips for Nonprofits on Social Media page on our website.
We are currently rolling out a new way to organize the tips and advice we give you on our website. While we’ve organized the site by topic for some time (under the “What are you working on?” section of the homepage), we will now further break down that advice based on experience level, making it easier to find the right advice for you.
Now, when you go to our social media resource page, you will be able to select from 3 tabs:
- Start Here
- Then Try
- Next Steps
You will also see the form to download How to Use Hashtags to Promote Your Cause.
(We’ve also redone our e-newsletter tips page and our online fundraising tips page if you want to take a look at those too!)
