We are a little over halfway through 2020 and it is just one s**tstorm after another, isn’t it?
But wherever you are right now, it’s important to take a step back and look at how you are taking care of yourself. As I was recently reminded:
If we can’t take care of ourselves, we won’t be able to take care of others.
Sara Fabian, The Ultimate Reason Why Self-Care Is Not Selfish
And I have several people who rely on me – from my spouse, kids, parents, and friends to my colleagues and clients.
And those in the nonprofit industry also have the added weight of trying to make the world a better place through our work. But remember the quote above:
If we can’t take care of ourselves, we won’t be able to take care of others.
In her recent article, Sara Fabian shares how she takes care of herself, and I thought it would be a good reminder for you too. Here is what she said:
- Manage Your Time Wisely
- Take Care of Your Body
- Do Things for Your Heart and Soul
- Set Healthy Boundaries
- Let Go of Perfectionism
- Ask for Help
- Let Go of the “Do-It-All” Mentality
(The last one really resonates with me as I often equate “doing nothing” with “laziness” but they are NOT the same thing.)

It’s important for you to find out what YOU need to recharge. I can take a power nap, but I know others can’t. Exercise helps my mood and focus, but I don’t care anything about things like facials or massages. That may be the opposite for you. A nice cup of tea does wonders, but you may need your coffee (or no caffeine at all).
Use this second half of 2020 to really key in on what you need. Because – one final time:
If we can’t take care of ourselves, we won’t be able to take care of others.
