I’ve had a bit of a rough week . . . pain in three different parts of my body from unrelated maladies, a septic tank on the fritz and still not totally fixed, technology problems too numerous to count — contributing to both missed deadlines and even whinier than usual children — and a very expensive speeding ticket from a few weeks ago still sitting on my desk.
It’s stressing me out, but not nearly as much as it used to.
Since I turned 40 last year, for some reason, I’m able to take all of this much more in stride. I see the silver lining in just about every dark cloud these days. I’m immensely thankful that I have the means to call the doctor and get the prescriptions, to own a house (septic tank and all), to work from home in a high-tech office with a daytime nanny, and to own the SUV that responds a little too well to my lead foot. I live in small town with a low graduation rate and a high unemployment rate. I can see every time I leave my house what happens to people who have the same problems that I do, but who don’t have the means to handle them. I don’t take what I have for granted anymore. I’m thankful for every annoying bit of it.
I’m also thankful for all of the blessings in my life that help me get through rough weeks like this one. Just on the “work” side alone, I’m so happy to have
– A fabulous virtual assistant and little sister, Kristina Leroux, who’s helping me with a big technology transition this week (more on that later).
– Incredible business partners and great friends in Nancy Schwartz and Claire Meyerhoff, whom I talked to this week about some really exciting nonprofit marketing stuff for 2011 (more on that later too).
– Challenging and fun consulting clients like the Conservation Council of NC and the Ocracoke Foundation, who are trusting me to help them through some big communications transitions this week and in the coming months.
Thank you, one and all.
